Welcome to the Girlguiding Anglesey County Website

Girlguiding Anglesey is part of Girlguiding UK, the largest charity for girls and young women in the UK with over 500,000 members. We have been providing adventure, friendship and fun for over 100 years. Girlguiding UK is part of a World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), making us part of a ‘family’ of over 10 million girls and women in 150 countries around the globe.

Girlguiding Anglesey is one of the 12 Counties making up Girlguiding Cymru. We may be a small County, but we are very proud of our unique heritage which has led to our island home being known as ‘Môn, Mam Cymru’ – Anglesey, the Mother of Wales.

Girlguiding started on Anglesey in 1914, not long after Sir Robert Baden-Powell started Scouting for boys. He responded to a plea to provide ‘something for the girls’, and The Guide Association was started in 1910 by his sister, Agnes. The organisation has changed a lot since then, but our basic aim of empowering girls and women to fulfil their potential in life remains the same.

Here on Anglesey, we have meetings for different age groups (or ‘sections’) delivered by volunteer leaders. As well as weekly meetings during term times, our trained volunteers often arrange trips, special events, and residential opportunities for the girls.

We are organised in five Districts across Anglesey and the volunteer leaders meet regularly, both face-to-face and online, to keep up to date with events and trainings. In a rapidly changing world and as part of an organisation which is girl-led there are constant challenges, but we know we are making a difference in our community and in our own lives.

About Girlguiding

Covid-19

No face to face meetings can take place at present. They will only start again when allowed by Girlguiding in line with Government guidance, and after risk assessments of properties and units have been completed.

However, Girlguiding has stayed active in new and imaginative ways over the past year. Many leaders have been sending out activities by post or e-mail for girls to do at home, and some of our units are meeting online. ‘Adventures at Home’ are freely available for everyone on the Girlguiding UK website.

Here on Anglesey, we held a Virtual Sleepover in November 2020 and recently launched 2nd Anglesey (Virtual) Guide and Ranger Unit which meets online. Find out more on our News page.
